Students of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications Will Be Pushing Innovations (SPIN) Program

Posted by: On April 16th, students began to submit ideas for the COVID-19 Innovation Program, a two-part program intended to help them achieve their academic goals by adapting to the social, economic, and technological changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is a collaboration between the Ohio State University and South Carolina State on a full-time, academic-based program that will start in May 2020, and will continue in June 2021.

This year, the program’s goal is for 15 students — 8 on each of the summer sessions, 5 on the fall session, and 5 on the spring. The program will be offered in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Students who do not speak English will be tested for basic fluency before continuing with the program.

“I’m very excited by the idea of starting the program,” said Eunice Vann, assistant professor of English.

Vann has started the program with five students.

Vann also hopes that the program will help future students who struggle with language issues. To help, she has added ESL teachers to the program.

“One of the most effective things that I’ve done in terms of language is make it a part of my class schedule,” said Vann. “I’m teaching my class how to be conversational, how to communicate with other students, and how to talk about what I want to do in class. I get my students to be communicative, and I feel like they’re making progress.

Vann, who is also professor of sociology, said that during the COVID-19 pandemic, she has been able to help her ESL students by offering classes with a teacher who is available remotely.

“One of the things that has been beneficial about this, is that the ESL teachers are able to be close to their student,” said Vann. “Even if it’s only one hour, they can be there.

Vann, a graduate of Wesleyan University, received her master’s degree in English education.

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) recently released the second installment of its annual “Best of Student Work” report which outlines student accomplishments and accomplishments of other undergraduate STEM programs. The report follows the same methodology used for the first annual, where faculty and administrators were able to nominate their students with the hope of winning the top individual award. A conversation with Jian Wong at the NCSA

There are plenty of ways to describe Jian Wong, a writer and researcher who recently co-edited a special issue of the journal American Fiction Studies. In this interview, we talk about his research into Chinese government and culture, his current work, and the political climate in Asia.

The following interview was conducted by Adam Shapiro from the New China Review, edited by the North Carolina Center for the Study of East Asian Languages and Cultures, and published for the first time in the Spring 2014 issue of The China Quarterly.

What is your research into Asian Chinese government and culture? Jian is a Chinese-American and a professor of literature and creative writing, whose current research focuses on the relationship between Chinese culture and the Asian diaspora, specifically American-Chinese writers. Jian’s writing, with occasional contributions from his wife, Lisa Wong, have been published in various international venues. The China Quarterly published an interview review of Jian’s work on Friday, as part of the Spring 2014 issue.

The China Quarterly: Jian, I know that you have co-edited a special issue of American Fiction Studies. Can you tell me a bit about this special issue and the contributors? Jian: Sure. The special issue is titled “Chinese Fiction,” edited by Anthony J. It focuses on both American and Chinese fiction and art. In it, we’re going to get the best of the best in American fiction and see the very best of the East Asian fiction. The two writers in the special issue are Tan Dun, a Chinese-American novelist (who is from Hong Kong), and the well-known Chinese-American poet Chin Koo. Chin Koo is the winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Literature. Tan Dun is one of the most widely-cited, well-regarded Chinese-American novelists writing in English today.

The China Quarterly: At the outset, one might assume that Chin Koo would be the first Chinese-American author to write in English, and to be picked up by a Western publisher. Is he that rarest of instances? Jian: Absolutely, yes. Chin Koo is widely read in China and has very international connections.
