Sports coverage from USA TODAY.

Sports coverage from USA TODAY.

In this special interview with the editors of four USA TODAY titles, you’ll be able to hear from the nation’s top sports writers about the topics they cover, with a focus on the impact the sports world is having on people’s lives.

For more than 25 years, writers and editors around the country have been gathering ideas, information and suggestions from sports fans from all walks of life. This month, USA TODAY editors will begin to share what they’ve discovered. We’ll try to share the ideas and get your feedback from fans about what’s working, what’s not, and what must be done to keep it going.

The interview goes out today.

Barry Cason: USA TODAY’s coverage is a broad umbrella, covering everything from politics and economics to business and law and society, and to a certain extent includes politics. The newspaper doesn’t have a specific department for sports, but I think that’s a natural extension.

Jim Caple: The newsroom is spread out. You’ll notice on the front page you’ll find a sports section. It’s a nice change of pace from the usual sports section. Our other sports division is here, but we also have the business news. We have the magazine and the business, so there are sections of the newspaper. And we have a regular section – business stories, legal news, personal finance, and the like.

As you know, the editor’s page is the second page of the newspaper. And the sports editor is the first.

Barry Cason: I don’t know that there’s the expectation for sports journalism. I don’t know that there’s that degree of coverage that we normally get. I do know that the average sports fan – I live here for 35 years now – has enough information on the Internet to understand what’s going on. So the expectation for sports stories to be that you don’t need to know a lot in order to understand what’s going on. We do have some people who are able to understand it, though.

Jim Caple: This is exactly the way it is. I can tell you that when these guys came in, they were pretty well schooled on it.
