By now you’ve probably heard a lot of the speculation about the status of the head coaching job at Oklahoma State University and who will be the successor.
In the end, it all depends on which coach wants the job and can get it.
I don’t know that there’s one best of the possible. There have been many bad coaches. For example, before Larry Brown was given the OK State job, he had some of the best numbers in the nation for winning two Big 12 titles and beating everyone in the league. But Brown failed to win a Big 12 title, which was the right thing to do.
On the other side of the spectrum, before Roy Williams arrived on campus, the Sooners went through a lot of turmoil. With his arrival and the growth of the program, they won a Big 12 title. It’s a different thing to replace him, but at least his best era was better than most of the worst. There’s an argument that the best coach was Bill Self and the second best coach was Chuck Martin.
So there’s no one right answer. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a good coach out there, but there is no one perfect. Maybe the best coaching job in college basketball history would be the one that comes up, but that’s not necessarily a good thing.
But there are some things to consider when evaluating a potential coach.
When I wrote about this a few years ago, I said that Chuck Martin was the best coach of the last half-century. Well, in recent years, Martin has fallen back in the rankings due to some of his questionable coaching decisions and the fact that he’s been accused of being dishonest.
I know that some people don’t think of Chuck Martin as being a great coach. I personally think Chuck Martin’s career has been as good as it can be. I mean, he made the Sweet 16 on five occasions. But for people who haven’t followed his career and have looked up the stats, it’s not that impressive.

However, he was also repeatedly targeted on the defensive end, with larger wings like Paul George and Marcus Morris bullying him on the way to the basket or the post.
As the Los Angeles Clippers’ season came to a close recently, many were wondering exactly how they would do after four road wins and a home loss to the Miami Heat. The answer came through the end of the seventh game of the series against the Suns.
Clipper Chris Paul played just 10 minutes, and finished the game with just one assist. As a result, the game, as the Clippers’ final act of the series, was called a “no-contest” and the Suns got the final four games of the series. The only goal the Suns could grab was a chance to win the NBA Finals.
After winning Game 1, the Suns then went on a losing streak. They lost their first game, Game 2, they lost their next three games, and the Suns never looked like they were going to return to the Finals.
Even though Game 3 was close, the Suns could only get a field goal and an added three-point lead to clinch the series. The Clippers did what they wanted, and then some, and the final four games of the series were a do-or-die moment for the Suns. Ultimately, they lost.
The Suns do not have Paul George.
To begin the series, the Suns had two players in the starting lineup. They needed to get a win against the Indiana Pacers to keep their playoff hopes alive. They did, and although Paul George was at the heart of the team, they still looked like they were in trouble.
The Suns did not have much to do with their first game that came to life, going to their home court and winning by a whopping 27 points. The Clippers took Game 2 by a similar margin. The Suns then won Game 3 by a similar margin. The series then came down to Game 4. The Clippers had the advantage in the series as they had won Game 2, but the Suns were getting in the way. Paul George had a game-high 35 points in Game 4, while the Clippers had 15.
The game was a nail-biter. The Suns made it close early in the game, going on a 10-0 run, and when it ended the Clippers had a 29-23 lead with about eight minutes left to go in the game.
The Suns were playing in their first playoff series in seven years. They would win the game though.
