Upland Database Operating-System (UPLD), a commercial system designed to provide a complete database implementation, has been sold to System/360 vendors for around $36. The system consists of a single, monolithic, IBM® MVS® software component that is sold as a single, fully-featured product, available for purchase with purchase of a license or a subscription.
A major feature of Upland is the ability to run an application on a wide range of IBM System/360 mainframe computers, providing access to both high-level transaction processing capabilities, such as the IBM Tivoli® Database Management System (DBMS), and lower-level storage subsystems, such as tape drives.
Upland was designed for use as the basis for a new model of shared storage subsystem. Since the system was designed and developed specifically for System/360 systems, many enhancements have been made to the system architecture for use as a standalone or on-package component of a large, heterogeneous storage system.
Upland can provide an alternative to systems that use shared storage, such as file servers, storage area networks (SAS), or multi-core processors. Since the system can be implemented as a stand-alone product, Upland can provide the benefits of a full-featured database, without the high-cost required to implement and maintain a proprietary database system.
Database: The system includes IBM Tivoli DBMS and an integrated tape library to support both tape library functions, and access to databases and stored programs across multiple processors. Database functions are performed out-of-band via a network, and are not directly executed by the processor.
Stored programs: Programs in the Upland database are implemented using the Tivoli Object Oriented Database Language (ORDO) standard.

A lot of today’s developers are worried about the future of software. That’s understandable.
The future of software will probably have an impact on us. Not only the software itself, but the companies the software will help grow into. With the current rate of change, that could easily mean that one day, most of the software you use may appear obsolete by the time you’ve reached your 30s. Just think of the number of people who have to use computers every day.
That’s where the current pace of change could pose a risk to a lot of people. That’s why I’ve suggested that software developers should care about the future of software. There is good stuff to think about when you design systems.
