Abstract: Software sustainability in the cloud and its impact on software quality and development lifecycle management and its integration with software lifecycle management are not yet fully explored. Such an inquiry is fundamental because software sustainability is crucial for software quality and development lifecycle management. This paper proposes that software sustainability is related to software quality, software lifecycle management, and software lifecycle management integration. The authors first analyze the issues and problems of software sustainability in the cloud data center. Then, the authors analyze the issues and problems of software sustainability in software lifecycle management and in software lifecycle management integration. The authors also propose to define software sustainability as software quality is the process of being “sustainable”. This definition can be used as the definition of sustainability for software quality.

The most widely used green software metrics, such as the software use metrics (SUM) and software complexity metrics (SCM), are all based on human judgement and are therefore prone to human error. In this paper, we present a new metric for software quality measurement using a mathematical model. This model is based upon the idea that software development requires a multi-layer model to be established and can be divided into various layers. Each layer is considered as a potential resource. We define the multi-layer model as a tree structure, and we propose an optimization solution for measuring software quality using the Multi-layer Software Quality Evaluation (MLSQ) Model. We have applied the MLSQ model to the following five green software metrics: software development time per project, software development productivity, software quality, software code size, and software defect density. Our results show that the MLSQ model outperforms both previously used green metrics in terms of the mean total number of observations and in terms of overall assessment of quality. Moreover, we have found a significant correlation between the number of software projects undertaken by the same firm as well as between the number of software projects undertaken by two firms. This makes it possible to apply MLSQ as a tool to measure the effectiveness of green software development.
Empirical research has shown that software development is often perceived as an expensive process, which leads to a long development cycle and waste of valuable time.
