KidsFirst Meadow Lake in Downtown Denver
A new Meadow Lake park is set to open this summer in downtown Denver, a part of a $60 million project to remake the neighborhood’s center as an educational playground.
It will be named KidsFirst Meadow Lake, and its site — at the intersection of W. 10th and Broadway, just east of the Metro Center — will be the first and only park in the city where children age 2 and younger can attend classes in a park setting.
“This playground is exciting for the first time in America to start a new stage to the urban landscape as the urban environment becomes more educational,” said Mark Tavenner, a member of Denver Water’s board who is a member of the Denver Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
The playground will replace an existing playground in the city’s downtown that was a part of an effort to raise awareness about water quality in the city’s parks and gardens.
Denny Fickett, chief executive officer of Denver Water, said the new park will “be an economic driver” for the neighborhood and will “foster collaboration” among the city, neighborhood organizations and developers.
“We are excited to partner with kids,” he said. “It’s a huge public health issue, as well as a good business opportunity.

The playground will not be a new park, but will be located the same way as the existing park, right next to a skate park and children’s playground. It will be designed, created and built by the Denver Area Public Health Department, under the direction of city and neighborhood leaders.
“KidsFirst Meadow Lake will become the first new playground in the city of Denver,” said Tavenner, whose organization is overseeing the project with the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation and other community partners. “It will be an incredible place where kids can practice the arts, play sports, play games and meet neighbors.
KidsFirst Meadow Lake is not a neighborhood playground. It is part of the larger KidsFirst community park project, which is planned for the site.

Tips of the Day in Programming
The question of “when and where should we use a library or language?” has many faces.
And it isn’t all one-sided. Most of us tend to think about what is most appropriate for our audience’s needs—and that’s usually language-specific (to some degree). The question is also complicated when you’re looking at multiple questions at once.
But in between those two extremes lie dozens of questions that may seem much more complex. These range from a simple question of whether or not to use a library for a specific purpose (like making debugging easier or more efficient) to more complex question of “how do I know when I’m done using a library, and does that mean I have to use a new language?”.
To focus our discussion here, these types of questions are really two-part (if you’re familiar with the terminology).
