Health Ministry Official Says Mass Student Party Is Unusual
One of the top health ministry officials responsible for overseeing the annual mass student party in honor of the State of Israel’s Independence Day has gone on the record in support of the decision.
At a hearing on the bill in the Knesset, the Health and Medicine Minister, Shai Piron said he supports the idea of prohibiting mass student party celebrations in Israel.
“I believe that the mass student party is unnecessary, it is counterintuitive to the values of the State of Israel, the values of the nation,” Piron said. “It is dangerous for Jews, it is dangerous for society.
The Health Ministry is currently drafting a new bill to regulate mass student celebrations, but the issue is likely to fall under the purview of the Ministry of Education.
The bill would require mass student parties to be approved by the Education Ministry, and require that the organizers are legally responsible.
The bill also calls for the approval of the public, Jewish and non-Jewish communities, and private organizations that organize mass gatherings or events – not just mass student parties.
Piron, the Health and Medicine Minister, also said he thinks Israel should implement more stringent security measures after the attack that killed five Israelis in the Mavi Marmara in May, and not keep celebrating itself in the past.
“There is enough evidence that shows that a large number of Israelis are not in their bedrooms, in their basements, at their homes,” he said. “So there is a real danger, and in fact a catastrophe, if we celebrate with one hand tied behind our backs.
Piron’s comments came after a group of activists that protested against the student party, calling it an anti-Semitic gathering, held a rally in Tel Aviv during State of Israel Day celebrations.
The students staged a similar protest in Jaffa, the coastal city where Israel’s Independence Day is celebrated.
At the protest, the crowd chanted “Death to Israel” and called for the organizers to be prosecuted. Police said the organizers were “not under criminal investigation.
But Piron’s comments appear to mark a departure from his earlier statements.
