Taco Fest: Where are the roving tacos?
It was the spring of 1990 and a group of computer scientists from the University of Michigan had just been accepted into the IBM-Roc and were beginning their work as part of a research team. That spring there was a big computer party where the computer scientists would receive a gift and a new lab coat, and one of the members of the team had given away a copy of Echelon, a book that had just been published by the research group. The book was on the topic of distributed systems, and it gave the book its name – Echelon.
Two years later the research group was still doing research. “We were doing research in distributed computing” said the author. “We started to really explore the idea of systems that are distributed, as opposed to systems that are centralized. ” The distributed systems were of a different sort than anything that the team had done before. Echelon is about finding ways to create more efficient distributed systems.
The team’s research has been influential in many ways, and over the years this has attracted a number of authors, including Richard Lidz. That year, he came to the research group and published a paper “Cisco Distributed System: A Very Distributed Model of TCP/IP and TCP/IP-Based Applications”, in which he proposed using TCP/IP over distributed systems where the nodes were composed of a number of computers that were connected to each other over a wire. However, Lidz also noted in the paper, “Because these systems are more decentralized than TCP/IP systems, the cost of sending and receiving information using these systems is much lower than TCP/IP.
Another paper, in 1996, was published by the research group in which the team proposed a very different “distributed” model that was entirely different than the traditional TCP/IP model. This distributed system was completely decentralized, and had no central node of the system; the communication among nodes was done by the nodes themselves. The authors of that paper were called Echelon Research Group. It was an exciting time, and the team was able to make some really significant contributions.
In the mid- 1990s there was a period of new invention in the field of distributed computing.
