Russia’s online espionage campaign aimed at helping the government of President Vladimir Putin’s party win political power has reportedly been aided by the use of Kaseya software.
One of the software used recently to steal the passwords of tens of thousands of US government employees was sold on the black market in Russia and used to hack US private businesses, the Washington Post reported. The use of offshore server to carry out the hacking campaign has not been confirmed, however.
As part of the cyber espionage campaign, the US was also targeted with hacking attempts through the use of malicious software, as well as spear-phishing attacks delivered in the mail. The aim was to help the Kremlin use information obtained in the hacking campaign to strengthen its position in power.
The hacking was reported by US officials as being directed against a private US company using a private, off-the-grid server, where the hacks targeted US businesses.
Russia has been using Kaseya software since at least 2009 to hack into US systems and get access to private information gathered by the US government, according to security firm FireEye.
In an interview with The Post, Russia expert Jonathan Zdziarski, a University of Maryland professor who writes regularly for Forbes, said he was unsure about the extent to which the software was a factor in the cyber attack.
“I think it’s very difficult to really pin down what is really going on,” he said.
“I don’t know whether it’s an act-of-state attack by a foreign powers, a cyber espionage attack, or whether it’s a hack of the sort that’s been done by Russia with a US corporation.
