Russia’s online espionage campaign aimed at helping the government of President Vladimir Putin’s party win political power has reportedly been aided by the use of Kaseya software.

One of the software used recently to steal the passwords of tens of thousands of US government employees was sold on the black market in Russia and used to hack US private businesses, the Washington Post reported. The use of offshore server to carry out the hacking campaign has not been confirmed, however.

As part of the cyber espionage campaign, the US was also targeted with hacking attempts through the use of malicious software, as well as spear-phishing attacks delivered in the mail. The aim was to help the Kremlin use information obtained in the hacking campaign to strengthen its position in power.

The hacking was reported by US officials as being directed against a private US company using a private, off-the-grid server, where the hacks targeted US businesses.

Russia has been using Kaseya software since at least 2009 to hack into US systems and get access to private information gathered by the US government, according to security firm FireEye.

In an interview with The Post, Russia expert Jonathan Zdziarski, a University of Maryland professor who writes regularly for Forbes, said he was unsure about the extent to which the software was a factor in the cyber attack.

“I think it’s very difficult to really pin down what is really going on,” he said.

“I don’t know whether it’s an act-of-state attack by a foreign powers, a cyber espionage attack, or whether it’s a hack of the sort that’s been done by Russia with a US corporation.

The malware responsible for the recent cyber attacks in Russia has been named in the latest round of lawsuits against the attackers and the software company who is under attack.

Catherine Lacey, the lead cyber-security executive at Symantec, has filed suit in London, against three Russian hackers and a small Finnish software company. The Russian hackers, who are thought to be members of the Russian-based Fancy Bear unit of the Russian state, allegedly created the malware that targeted the files on the computers of nearly 2,000 customers in the U. , Canada and U. on July 20 and 21 in what many people see as a Russian revenge attack.

A criminal complaint obtained by The Wall Street Journal states that the hackers, using a command-and-control server linked to the Russian government, first released the ransomware, which was used to infect computers, and then deployed the malware onto the targeted computers, which enabled the hackers to commit the attack.

The complaint states that the attackers are the same ones who in June launched the Ukraine-based hacking group, which was blamed for a series of high-profile cyber attacks on U. and European businesses that included the theft of financial and credit card information for tens of thousands of people and personal details, as well as the theft of sensitive information about millions of employees of companies in the U. A criminal complaint made public Friday night states that both the Ukrainian and Russian hacking groups operate from a common command-and-control server that the hackers were able to access through the Internet.

“This is a Russian government-backed group with a strong following of victims. They have been using the Russian government’s command-and-control servers to conduct these attacks on a significant number of companies in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom,” Symantec founder Paul Hirst told the Financial Times.

government is being victimized. And the victims of the attacks are just as shocked as the businesses they attacked.

Symantec has also filed a lawsuit in London, as a victim of the attacks.
