In the fall of 2016, the future of the Republican Party was at stake. If they lost, they would face the specter of an insurgent populist in the White House. If they won, they would face the even more profound prospect of another four years of Donald Trump’s presidency. For many Republicans, the 2016 election was about the possibility that a party so consumed by traditional party politics would become a party of radical populism. While there is no denying that many Republicans were hoping for a different result, there are also no indications that many members of Congress felt that a Donald Trump presidential victory would be a game-changer. This is because of one of the biggest facts about the 2016 presidential election: Republicans lost because the Republican party was the last and only viable political party that had a shot of winning in 2016. In other words, the 2016 election was not about a party gaining power—it was about a party losing power. Of course, the Republican Party lost power precisely because the party was itself a losing proposition. The party had been a failed political party for the past 30 years. They had been the party of the establishment, a party of the wealthy, a party that had failed to build an economic system in the United States that would enable the middle class to live without having to worry about the ever-rising wealth gap. And they had been a party of big government. In short, Republicans did not win the election in 2016 because they were an establishment party; they won it because a party of the establishment had been the party of power for so long. But that is exactly what Trumpism is, and the future of the Trumpian Republicanism is, to an unprecedented degree, about Trump himself.
Donald Trump has not been a Republican for very long, and he has not spent much time in the party. But he seems to know that there are some people inside the Republican Party, as well as outside it, that are not happy with the way things are going. He is not a perfect political, but he does present himself to the world as a perfect political. And what he presents as a great political—a political that brings America and the world together—is in fact, rather than an expression of his personal values—his values on the campaign trail.
