The New Generation of Consoles
The biggest thing coming to consoles in the very near future is the introduction of a new console generation. The newest generation, after decades of game consoles releasing the same game for the same price, is going to have a new generation of consoles. The idea behind the new consoles is that with the introduction of the new generation there will be a new generation of consoles with an entirely new product line.
The first new generation of consoles that was really released was the IBM System/2, which was released in 1986. The IBM System/2 was really a workstation for doing spreadsheets and word processing. It was great for people to work on their spreadsheets with a computer in their office, but it’s a really slow computer and it just didn’t have the bandwidth that was needed to make a lot of the things you’d do on the computer with spreadsheets and word processing programs, like putting a spreadsheet together to present an invoice or a statement, doing word processing, and then sending your invoice, paying your bill and printing the receipts, which took a lot of time.
With the introduction of the IBM System/2 there was a lot of excitement in computing circles about the new generation of hardware. People said, there’s the new hardware. There’s going to be a new generation of computers. It was a good thing for the business sector. It was a good thing for the consumer sector, because the consumer sector needed more bandwidth than they had before. This set up the start of the video game console business, but then the game console business just kept growing in a very un-console-like fashion.
The reason why that happened is because you had two basic reasons. One was you had to have the hardware right. You had to get the right graphics chip, you had to have the right sound chip, you had to have the right network chip and even the right CPU chip, so every time you wanted to do one of those things you had to have a computer that was good at that thing. The problem with the IBM System/2 was that it was very limited about what it could do because it was just the IBM System/2, which was a workstation computer, it was not a video game machine. That’s not what this generation of consoles are going to do.
