From the Editor: I’m putting up a challenge to win a copy of the famous PDP-1 computer. Yes, that famous IBM ThinkPad that started the home computing revolution.
The answer is: “No. ” But there are several contenders. You’ll have to enter the game with a PDP-1, or PDP-1E if you want to win. It’s one of the oldest computers in the world, a relic of the 60s, and the original one that started the whole home computing revolution.
The PDP-1 was first developed in 1968, in the midst of a major home computing revolution. The PDP-1 was one of the first multiprocessing machines to be designed, and the first machine to have a display. It was also the first computer to have the ability to read non-standard operating systems. The PDP-1 had all those components so you could use it with the DECOS operating system or the CP-11 one.
The PDP-1 also became one of the first machines to have its own operating system, called PDP-1OS. This was the first OS to be developed on a computer. It was essentially a “port of” another system, so to speak. It did almost all the job of the original PDP-1. And in 1971, PDP-1OS was ported to a host computer, the P-1000, and its OS was called TOSOS. That’s the one that inspired the TOS, the TOS operating system that IBM developed and popularized.
The second system to be ported to TOSOS was the PDP-1E. This was the system on which the first popular home computing operating system, the DECOS operating system was ported. It came out in the late 70s. And while the original PDP-1E OS was pretty much an operating system for itself, it was also the first one to have the ability to read TOSOS. Ahead of Computex in Taipei, AMD officially launched their new Phenom VII Pro, a new desktop CPU with the new core and memory technology, which is the first AMD CPU to use the ‘High-bandwidth Core‘, which means that AMD has finally succeeded in designing a CPU that can run at a much higher frequency, but at the same time, it has a little bit less power than the previous Phenom series CPUs.
The new Phenom VII Pro with a new core will be available in different versions for the gaming, work and casual markets. On a single socket, it can be socketed in the ‘LGA 1151‘ or LGA 1154‘ CPU socket.
