The Railroad Commission has released a draft plan that includes new monitoring and enforcement strategies for the railroad industry. The plan is a result of conversations and meetings with stakeholders that began last year. The draft includes the commission’s first-ever plan for monitoring and enforcement of the nation’s passenger railroads. The draft plan is important because it provides a framework for implementation of new policies over the next few years. The new strategy includes efforts to monitor compliance with the Passenger Transportation Act of 1990, implementing new passenger rail train safety regulations, identifying railcar recalls, and adopting new enforcement standards. “The draft plan continues the trend of the commission’s being a proactive participant in the regulatory process,” said Jeff Tittel, chair of the commission’s board of directors. “With this draft plan, the board expects to achieve its objectives by engaging with stakeholders and agencies at an early stage of the process. ” The draft is based on input from the commission staff, other rail industry stakeholders, and agency personnel. The draft plan also provides an update on the state and local governments’ roles in the regulatory process. “The plan reflects the commission’s commitment to partnership with other parties and agencies, while also keeping in mind the commission’s role as the primary regulator of the nation’s passenger railroads. The commission believes that strong partnerships and the ongoing exchange of information are essential to ensure the agency’s future success in these critical areas,” said John Hartnett, chair of the commission’s board of directors. “The railroad industry will benefit significantly from the establishment of robust monitoring and enforcement, including the implementation of improved customer notification systems so that passengers will understand their train’s safety status. ” For more information on the draft plan, contact David C.
