Recently I discovered an interesting vulnerability in one of the NAS BIT products that was not reported before. The vulnerability allows attackers to access the NAS BIT devices and potentially access the data stored on them through a specially crafted NAS BIT packet with an encrypted payload. A malicious NAS BIT device could potentially be used to steal data stored on other NAS BIT devices.

Assume that an attacker is able to send a crafted NAS BIT packet from an unknown source. The NAS BIT device could be on a LAN (e. a PC), while the attacker could be able to use NAS BIT to move an authenticated NAS BIT packet to the NAS BIT device attached to the LAN.

The NAS BIT device is a client device that performs NAT-based communication. An authorized NAS BIT device on the LAN could send a NAS BIT packet to a NAS BIT device on the LAN.

If the NAS BIT packet is authenticated, the NAS BIT device will respond with a NAS BIT packet that conforms to the NAS BUS specifications.

As the NAS BIT packet is sent out, the device will encrypt the NAS BIT packet. If the NAS BIT packet is authenticated, the device will respond with a NAT-based NAS BUS packet.

When the NAS BIT packet is being transmitted without authentication, all data in the NAS BUS packet will be encrypted. Since the NAS BIT device is located on the LAN, the NAS BUS packet that is sent to the NAS BIT device must be authenticated.

NAS BUS payloads are encrypted using the same symmetric key as the NAS BIT.

NAS BUS packets can only be decrypted once the NAS BIT packet has been authenticated.

The results of this kind of testing are important to show a product’s reliability and to ensure that the hardware meets the needs of the network.

In this article we’ll describe the method of testing the NAS device under stress conditions that will be used to see how well the new NAS device is performing.

NAS Burn is a test of a new NAS device conducted by a network administrator or a testing team when a new NAS device is to be added to a network. The test includes a full set of hardware components, a full set of software components, and a test bed network. The NAS device is installed into a test box and a test is conducted to determine whether the NAS device meets or exceeds the performance specifications for the NAS device. The most important security threats are caused by the attacks of software-based tools, which can access a device’s memory and execute memory-based attacks [@Razavi:2010:SCC:1757112. 1757127], [@Wang:2000:MPS:957112. To defend against this threat, memory authentication methods [@Wang:2008:MPD:1365117. 1365122], [@Razavi:2010:SCC:1757112. 1757127], [@Bartok:2008:MSS:1527116. 1527124] are often used.

In the past decade, the memory-based attacks on NAS servers has increased. To avoid the potential attack of the server’s memory, some researchers have proposed to use memory-based firewalls [@Wang:2010:MSA:1651175. 1651176; @Li:2013:ASM:2778115. By using these methods, only authentication, not security, is enforced. However, using these methods cannot guarantee against the memory-based attacks since attackers can make the server’s memory accessible by maliciously accessing the files.

In the field of memory-based firewalls, a technique, namely *Burn testing* [@Li:2013:ASM:2778115. 2778115], has been introduced to detect memory-based attacks. Burn testing evaluates whether the memory of a device is accessed by malicious code, even if the contents of the memory have been changed, using a known memory state with an unknown memory state, or a combination of both.

Burn testing is a safe and efficient strategy to detect memory-based attacks in NAS devices. However, if the information of the source of memory attack is unknown, using such strategy causes a serious security problem [@Wang:2008:MPD:1365117. 1365122], [@Bartok:2008:MSS:1527116.
