There is a long history of automation in manufacturing. In 1844, Thomas Fowler, who was also a mechanical engineer and inventor, developed automatic screw cutting apparatus for making mechanical components (Fowler, 2007). In the 19th century, the use of machines and automation systems spread worldwide. The use of steam-driven machines spread even wider in the 20th century than in previous centuries.
