The following is a report from a study of recycling of Computer Hardware. It is not a direct quote but a summary from it.
In 2001, the Office for National Statistics revealed that over 50% of all computer equipment was thrown out as “waste”. This figure did not keep rising until late 2006 when it stood over 60%. This figure is an average of all the estimates made of the proportion of all computer equipment thrown away by different agencies. This is, therefore, a low figure. However, from all the figures it is clear that more than half of all computer equipment is simply not recycled. This is an enormous amount of equipment, and if we compare it with the actual number then the figures are shocking.
The following graph shows the estimated proportions of Computer Hardware that is either thrown away or recycled by different agencies.
These figures are shocking because the vast majority of Computer Hardware will in fact be recycled.
When looking at the actual percentage of Computer Hardware being recycled in the various countries, we find that in the United Kingdom it is around 45% of Computer Hardware recycled. In the United States it is 35%. In the United Kingdom, the overall figure for Computer Hardware recycling is at least 65%.
There is no point in recycling computer hardware if it is not being recycled. This is so because even if a machine is broken down it can only be refurbished. If it is not put back together and replaced then it is considered “waste” and is thrown away.
