The Kernot Memorial Medal
A tribute to Larry Kernot. The Kernot Memorial Medal was established in 1990 by the Computer Society of the United States of America for contributions to the field of computer networking.
The Kernot Memorial Award was established by the Computer Society of the United States of America in 1990. It is named in honor of Larry Kernot (1922–2004), a well-respected and distinguished industry figure whose lifetime contributions to the computer industry have been well-recognized.
Larry Kernot began his career in 1946 as a graduate student in the Computer Science Department at the University of Illinois, Urbana–Champaign.
From 1948 until his retirement in 1989, Kernot was Professor and Chief Scientist of the Computer Science Department at the University of Illinois. There he was instrumental in the development of the Unix operating system, and was responsible for the creation of the UNIX operating system. He was also the principle designer of the Apple Macintosh, the first personal computer.
Kernot’s contributions to the computer field and the Unix operating system were widely acknowledged, and he has been honored by the society for his accomplishments, and for his contribution to computer networking.
The Kernot Memorial Award (KMA) is a national award for computer networking professionals, recognized by the Society for Networking and Computer Communications (SNC) as a way to award individuals who have made a significant contribution to networking in any given field, regardless of their field of specialty.
The KMA also recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to research in networking as well as those who have made a significant contribution to the networking and computer communications community as a whole.
“The computer industry is one of the greatest scientific endeavors in the industrialized world and the recognition of a distinguished individual is one of the primary ways in which the industry identifies and recognizes excellence. The Kernot Memorial Award is a tribute to Larry Kernot and recognizes his accomplishments and contributions to networking.
