The founders of the encrypted VPN are selling their company’s assets on the Dark Web, LimeVPN said Tuesday.

LimeVPN founder and CEO Ramesh Babu told CNET, “We’ve been making money for almost a year now, every day, and they’re not getting enough money.

LimeVPN, which has been around since 2008, has been plagued with problems lately. In September, it was hacked and $7 million of customers’ data was stolen. The company was shut down soon after. A large number of its subscribers had their accounts blocked and their credentials were not able to be used to log into accounts in the future.

On October 19, the company announced that it was shutting down. It would now have only 20 employees. “While the company was losing its customers, it was losing money, so I wanted to take the company down,” Babu told CNET. “It was taking all my money, and we were losing all my customers.

Babu went on the Dark Web to find potential buyers for the company’s assets.

The company is known for offering VPN services that are “open source” and encrypt user data to make it unrepeachable. The company had no direct links to any of its clients, rather its services were hosted for and by anonymous users. By hosting its services in the dark, the company avoided being traced.

But in recent months, its services have stopped being advertised and offered.

“I have come to realize that I’m basically trying to run out of money,” Babu, said.

The founder of LimeVPN said that after two years, he had “almost run out of money and clients,” and he had sold his company’s assets to buyers on the Dark Web.
