The day before a public announcement was made on the Internet, a hacker gained access to Microsoft’s network by injecting a spyware application.
For the last three years, hackers have managed to attack various security products. However, they made a huge breakthrough as they managed to break the authentication methods that were employed by Microsoft. According to a report published on Microsoft’s Windows blog, one of these methods was exploiting a vulnerability on Microsoft’s IntelliTrace service. Microsoft IntelliTrace is an application that allows users to monitor network activity in real time and in many cases, they give hackers full reign over the victim’s network.
Hackers are using IntelliTrace to spy on Microsoft users by injecting a malicious application into the user’s computer. The application attempts to access specific network ports. Then once that port has been opened, the malicious application attempts to access the Microsoft IntelliTrace application running on the victim’s computer.
Hackers are using a malicious application to spy on a server while they are connected to it. The application attempts to open certain ports on Microsoft’s IntelliTrace service, specifically listening on the HTTP protocol port 80. Although the hackers could have tried these methods on other ports, they opted to target the HTTP port. This allowed the hackers to monitor Microsoft’s network communication while they were connected.
