The Return of Cody Rhodes
- by Team
“I think the biggest difference with Cody is that he is now a fully developed wrestler,” said former AWA World Heavyweight Champion Scott Steiner. “He has worked for AWA almost every year he has been up until he got his chance in the company. I don’t think it’s changed nearly the way he is as a person. He’s still a very strong kid. He’s just an old man now and he’s got a younger guy.
“He’s really excited about working with his brothers, especially Joe and Cody,” said Shawn Michaels. “They’re just giving him the love he deserves.
In the same interview, Joe, who has remained loyal to his brother, said “It’s been great seeing how things are going with Cody. It’s been a real good, great experience for both of us. Cody has really grown into a real strong young man, and he’s a great guy for his age.
“Everyone is excited about the relationship between Cody and Joe,” Cody added. “It’s a good thing for everyone involved. I wish we had more people to work with. Everything is going as well as it could, but I still have a job to do. I’m going to go back and work on my wrestling skills and become an even better wrestler.
Cody, known for his work at AWA for the last 20 years, noted he still has a lot of life left in him.
“I don’t have bad tattoos,” he said. “I just don’t hide them. I did a couple years in the Army, and I won’t do any more active service. I worked out of a hotel room.
The Return of Cody Rhodes
Now this book is an absolute must-read for anyone curious about the Western West’s role in our past. He’s one of those authors who manages to combine a passion for history with the science of geography and the politics of the West, and I couldn’t imagine a better way to start my post-apology tour.
From the book’s dedication: “To those who would love to understand history as a process, not an event, but for the joy of living with the world as it is — and not necessarily for my own agenda.
“The past is a mysterious thing, and people who know less or less, but more, become more.
The voice of the West I love is Cody Rhodes. At this point, he’s a legend, well-respected in not only academia, but also in the popular media when he’s talked about. Last week I had the great pleasure of visiting his home in Portland, Oregon, to discuss my favorite podcast (Cody Rhodes: The Voice of the West), and his new book, Cody Rhodes: The Voice of the West. Rhodes is well-known for his passion for history, not just the Western history that we’ve had in recent decades, but also his deep love of geography, both the land and the people who inhabit it. And, of course, he’s a great writer. This book is simply the finest thing he ever did, and I’ll be back in the next week to continue the conversation.
The book is titled, Return of Cody Rhodes, and it comes out January 12th. We’ve got a podcast here, and a series of interviews with him and with various people on each podcast that talk about Cody Rhodes, the West, and what we can learn from it.
Cody Rhodes has rematching Malakai Black
An update on Malakai Black’s return.
This article from The Black Perspective looks at how Malakai Black’s return to the MMA cage has been received by the boxing community. The article also reveals how the fighter will compete against his former promoter and ex-teammate, Cody Rhodes, in a rematch of their UFC bantamweight bout in May.
Cody Rhodes and Malakai Black (25-5 MMA, 17-2 UFC) first met at UFC on Fox 13 in November 2012. Back then, it was a pretty close fight in terms of the judges’ scores; Black was favored by eight points and was even in the bell.
After that fight, the only way Black could beat Rhodes was if he took Rhodes’ advice and went to the well of the MMA machine and knocked Rhodes down.
With Rhodes out of commission for much of November, it looked like this fight was going to be a very close one.
In a fight with a lot of hype going into it, it turned out to be much less than that.
Rhodes and Black will meet again at UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Henderson 1 on Saturday, May 21 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Malakai Black is one of the UFC’s rising stars right now. He fought an impressive third and controversial fifth round knockout of Vitor Belfort on December 9, 2013, and he was recently defeated by UFC veteran and former champion Jon Jones via submission in the third round of a three-round fight on April 23, 2014.
If Rhodes is able to beat Black, he would only be the fourth man in the UFC to win the welterweight title in its second reign.
The fight against Rhodes is a huge one for several reasons.
This is the first fight in three years that Black has been unable to defend his belt, and he won it at UFC on FUEL 5 back in November 2012 when he used the second round knockout of Chad Laprise to become the UFC heavyweight champion.
What do you think about AEW all out?
It’s that time again when the AEW is on the air (and there’s only 3 matches available) and they’re bringing in new guys. Today AEW announced the addition of former NJPW champion The Hurricane and AEW United States Champion JT Alexander. While fans get excited to see their new additions and AEW’s new tag team champion, much like the last time they announced it, is there any actual difference between the new guys and the existing AEW? The answer to that will determine which two of these three new guys make it to their first major tag team tournament.
Now, the AEW will be bringing in a new guy to the fold by way of announcing the addition of two veterans to their tag team division. One of the new guys is former NJPW champion The Hurricane, who has been in the WWE since 2004 and has yet to find a team to give him a title shot. The Hurricane has competed for Team USA in matches against the likes of John Cena and Chris Jericho, and in the process he has become a real hot name in the wrestling world. However one of him major problems for the Hurricane and for AEW is his lack of a team to give him a title shot.
However, the Hurricane has a good friend in JT Alexander, who has been wrestling in Japan since 2005. After spending time in the WWE under the leadership of Eddie Guerrero and Randy Orton, Alexander has found a way to get his shot at a major title in the WWE. With the recent signing of the current Intercontinental Champion John Cena, Alexander now is the most well-rounded wrestler in the AEW. The Hurricane will be joining the AEW as a part of its four-man tag team division, the NWA World Tag Team Championship.
JT Alexander and The Hurricane have worked together before for TNA. In fact the Hurricane competed against JT Alexander as part of AEW’s Tag Team Championship tournament in March.
