I present two methodologies to place e-signatures on documents in a mobile app using an e-signature service. I examine the process of implementing the solution and the technical requirements involved in this approach. The solution consists of an Android app, a web-based backend, and a mobile device, and the solution is designed to work on any mobile device platform (i. iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7). This solution has been evaluated by a group of IT professionals within the financial institutions sector where it has been found to be effective in placing e-signatures on documents.

The method and the technology behind e-signature technology can be traced back to the 1970s. In the early 2000s, an author by the name “Ludvig Søe” published the e-signature technology in a paper titled “Digital Signature in a Mobile Environment” (DSE-MM) . The e-signature technology involved the use of technology that enables two parties to electronically sign a document for authentication or verification. A user’s electronic signature is verified by a third party, thereby eliminating the need for a second party to physically witness a signature.
The e-signature technology was first developed in the United Arab Emirates and the USA, and was later applied in numerous locations [2–4]. The techniques were also used with the e-signature technology for e-mail signature and digital signature on documents. Additionally, the e-signature technology was implemented in China in 2006.
In 2013, a project to implement e-signature technology on a document processing system called the Digital Signature Platform (DSP) was started at the Swiss Federal Credit Bank (SFCB), Zurich. SFCB partnered with a number of independent providers in order to use the e-signature technology. The project was launched in an early stage and was not well received due to perceived risks.

The best electronic signatures have been around for decades, and the technology is nearly universal. This means that, for many software applications, the best way to “sign” a document is through a simple electronic signature — the electronic equivalent of a signature from a real person.
The easiest way to create a signature is to use your computer. This is the most important technology choice, because an electronic signature requires the least training and practice, but it is the easiest method, because most software applications have been designed to allow you to sign documents directly. You may use a separate device to record the signature, but it is usually easier to create a signature with software and a pen or electronic pencil.
Now, it is important to understand that a signed document is not equivalent to a computer document signed with a key. A computer document is simply an electronic representation of the physical document. It is often sent by email or is stored in a database. In this context, a signature is a computer-generated representation — a digital copy — of the physical document.
But a signature can be an effective means of demonstrating authorization or legal authority. While digital signatures are usually intended for human authentication, legal signatures are often created by computer algorithms. And while the term is often used interchangeably, it is not interchangeable.
One may use a computer document to create a digital signature that proves an employer, a bank, a landlord, a government, or a group is authorized to act, or to prove compliance with terms of a contract or tax return.
