The Portland Business Journal is reporting that the U. Marine Corps is considering partnering with the city of Marine City to give river boaters a way to visit the downtown waterfront town and engage in the community with the public.

The Marine Corps says they plan to start the program in the fall of 2016. The city of Marine City is the third largest city in Oregon and has a population of 35,000 people. The city is located approximately 60 miles southwest of the Oregon coast.

Marine City is the home of Marine Corps Heritage Park and a historic Marine Corps Air Station. The Portland Business Journal reports that Marine Corps Heritage Park would be a focal point for people visiting those historical sites and also for tourists who might want to go on a river tour.

Marine Corps Heritage Park wouldn’t be the only place for the riverboat program; Portland has also been proposed to operate the “Boat to Beach” bus service that would shuttle people down to Marine City from the Oregon Coast.

Preliminary plans for Marine Corps Heritage Park, located in the city’s downtown, are already underway. The land and other infrastructure includes a small park and plaza, a large outdoor amphitheater, and a large grassy area with a “park.

The Friendship River Boat

The Friendship River Boat was an American boat built in the 1940s and 50s and used as a leisure boat on the Mississippi River, in the Mississippi River Boat Racing Association and as a family boat at Mabel’s Boats. The name was chosen by the boat’s two owners, both of whom were friends of one another and of the Mabel’s family. At the time of its first completion in the 1950s, the boat was owned by Mr. Cramer of Madison, Mississippi. It was a small, fast boat with a stern tender that could carry up to 10 people. Although the Mabel’s family sold out in 1999, this boat remains in operation and will continue to make the Mabel’s family proud.

It is no secret that Mississippi River boats are difficult to find. The Friendship River Boat has not been found in a state park in over 40 years. It is likely that the boat did not survive and would not have been found. Mississippi riverboats are a speciality and the boat’s owners who had the time, resources and desire to preserve the boat are proud owners and will share their story as well as the boat’s history.

This project has been a labor of love for two years. With help from many, it was possible to locate, photograph, organize, find and document the boat. I have written this article in full for the benefit of anyone wishing to read it, but more importantly, the boat’s owners. Their contribution has made it possible.

This project first started with me looking through online maps and trying to locate this boat. I came across a friend who had previously done a post on this topic. I wanted to thank him for sharing his knowledge and time and for keeping this project alive.

I hope this project is helpful for others. This article is an attempt to help others also learn about the Mississippi River boat in question, with a few questions included.

In the 1940s and 50s, the Mabel’s family owned the Friendship River Boat. As we would see later on in this article, Mr. Cramer of Madison, Mississippi, were very close friends and neighbors in St. Louis, Missouri.
