Linux Foundation and Open Ingenuity – The Mars Helicopter
The Linux Foundation, Inc. (“Linux Foundation”) is well-known for its support of open-source software (“OSS”) and its efforts in building a vibrant community of free contributors. The Linux Foundation has contributed to the creation of Linux, including the Linux kernel and various operating systems, including Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and even elementary OS — as well as the Open-Source Definition.
For its part, the Open Invention Network (“Open Ingenuity”) is a nonprofit organization of independent inventors that is leading the effort to develop new technologies for NASA and other NASA-related space agencies. In support of this work, Linux Foundation is working with Open Ingenuity to develop software for the Mars Helicopter — a project that seeks to create a high-tech, commercial, robotic, aerial platform capable of delivering a payload of up to three tons of cargo per mission.
The Mars Helicopter is a project that is part of the Mars Exploration Program — a NASA program designed to make manned missions to the Red Planet possible by 2020 — and has been developing for seven years to bring this technology to fruition. The mission is to carry a cargo of food and supplies to the surface of the planet and to return home. The Mars Helicopter is equipped with two payloads: a cargo module, capable of transporting supplies and a landing module, which will land on the Martian surface.
The Mars Helicopter will be able to fly for an extended period of time, with flights lasting up to eight months for the first mission. The craft has six main components including the propulsion, and two other components that include a thermal protection and a landing gear. The overall dimensions of the craft are 9 × 2. 5 × 2 meters. The size of the total payload of the Mars Helicopter is approximately 7 tons. The entire spacecraft will be able to achieve flight autonomy, and will be capable of traveling more than 200 kilometers per day. On the day of its launch, the craft will travel 873 meters per hour, which is equivalent to taking just a few minutes to travel one mile. The aircraft is expected to last two-and-a-half years.
The Mars Helicopter will be capable of carrying up to three tons of cargo, for use in the future on the Red Planet.

Abstract: This article discusses the importance of Software Tools for CubeSat Technology and Engineering Development and demonstrates how the process of designing and developing a software framework can serve to improve overall development in the field of CubeSats.
