How do you turn a PIN on a USB drive? The USB standard allows only one-time use of the PIN, but USB drive manufacturers usually set a small PIN on the hard disk. In this article, an engineer from Microsoft Windows team explains how to turn it on with a PIN.
A USB drive’s data on a USB drive is stored in a random-accessible area (RA) on the USB drive, and encrypted in two sectors at the beginning and end of the RA. The drive’s data is encrypted with a user-specific PIN, which can only be turned on with PIN-less USB devices by the system.
If you’ve purchased a USB drive with a PIN and the USB drive refuses to turn it on, it is your responsibility to secure the PIN to protect your data.
Turn the USB drive into a USB key.

The SSD Aegis Padlock – SSD
The Aegis (or Raid) technology was originally designed for use with the Intel GMA HD RAID controller to protect the drives from physical loss and damage due to the RAID software, such as power loss, accidental insertion, media damage, etc. The GMA HD RAID controller provides a hardware RAID function, such as RAID 1, RAID 4, and RAID 6, and the Aegis technology is designed to use the RAID functionality. Aegis also provides the protection of the drive, as well as the ability to use other drives, such as those with different capacity. Aegis is an old technology which has been replaced by SATA and NAND SSD, however, Aegis continues to be used, which has been supported for some SSDs for a very long time. Aegis has a number of known issues, such as a drive failure once every 5,000 writes. Aegis was the original RAID technology which has been used with Intel GMA HD and other SSDs, and has remained a reliable method for some time. The Aegis technology has not been widely accepted by all SSD users on the market, as it has not been widely compatible with a wide variety of SSD drives. Aegis currently runs on the Intel FCH Series SSDs, FCH2 Series SSDs, and FCH3 Series SSDs. The Intel SSDs are currently the only SSDs that support Aegis. However, due to Intel’s continued growth, Intel will continue to support other SSDs in the future, including the NVMe variants of the Intel SSDs. Aegis currently works with the Intel GMA HD and Intel GMA 950 series SSDs. Aegis runs as a software RAID, which means that it is still an option for RAIDing a drive or an entire array of drives together. Some of the other drives may not support Aegis due to incompatibilities. Aegis does not support RAID function with FCH3 series. Aegis has a number of known performance issues, such as a low random IOPS rate. Aegis does not work with SATA SSDs. Aegis was originally a software RAID, but has been replaced by the Intel SSDs with NVMe variants. Aegis currently does not work with the X25-S, X25-M, or X25-L SSDs.
