The 2022 Mesa County incident has made Masterson fearful.

The 2022 Mesa County incident has made Masterson fearful.

The incident on October 7, 2012, had a major impact on the career of one of Mesa County’s most respected technologists. In the video below, we’ll discuss how this incident is affecting his career and the importance of getting answers from his employer. We’ll also look at his experience as a contractor and look at what might have made him vulnerable.

When I started my IT career in 2003, one of the things I really was excited about was the idea of getting to use new software packages. While I had used Microsoft Windows in previous jobs, I never really considered them to be a standard for computer security. I took my first security class, and it was all about Windows Server 2003. I thought I knew enough to defend against attacks against Windows Server 2003. I was wrong- I had failed to be completely protected. With Windows Server 2012, Microsoft introduced a new product called Windows Defender, an anti-malware application, which I knew nothing about. In addition to Microsoft’s new anti-malware products, there were also new products from ESET about which I was completely ignorant.

The 2012 incident was a major event for me. I had just been promoted and I thought that meant that I had to change my job. I wasn’t too worried about the change. I had been through all my training, but there were some odd things I learned in my first two years. I was worried about my ability to defend against malware. It wasn’t that I didn’t have the skillset, but in my first couple of jobs, I was always taught how to fight off a sophisticated attack. By then I was out of my element. I didn’t have the experience that I wanted, but then I got lucky on the computer security job. I discovered that my previous employer had a great incident response team. This allowed me to get trained in various attack detection procedures. I was a student for a couple of years before I was put into a class on incident response.

Because of my poor understanding of what was happening, it was a huge mistake to not know that my new employer, Mesa County, had an incident response team. I should have been the first person on the team in case anything happened. This was a major thing for me.

Tips of the Day in Computer Security

[M]y friend and I were trying to help him set up his first website, and suddenly the Internet died. It happened so quickly he has no way of even telling you what was going on. We had been trying to help him set up a new website, and he started to get this page stuck saying “This site cannot be reached at this time. ” What is a virus? Where was he trying to make a website? If you’ve ever been so caught up in your own project that you can’t see the forest for the trees, it can be frustrating, and sometimes frustrating is exactly what you need. This could be a huge problem on the Internet.

[M]e were talking about the latest viruses — and I remember what my friend said. “They’re all programs,” he said. “Programs are made with words.

[T]hey are programs that get to you and try to take over your computer.
