New United Airlines flights to The Bahamas.
The latest air service to the Bahamas was made in June, when Delta and United Airlines announced that a new set of flights had started from New York City to Nassau and the Bahamas and that they were seeking a new airline to fly their new set of three daily flights on that route.
United and Delta announced that they would be working together on the new flights, and on June 27, United’s CEO, Tom Horton, announced via a press release a new company, United Airline Bahamas Ltd, that would begin flying its flights on August 1, and it would start with eight daily flights to Nassau and The Bahamas on August 5.
United has been operating their flights from New York’s JFK airport to Nassau since September 2000. United and Delta both operate flights from Newark International Airport in New Jersey to Nassau and The Bahamas as part of their regional passenger service.
For many years, United had operated the route as a stand-alone service, but it was dropped in October of 2003 due to passenger losses. Since then, the airline’s flights have been operated on a seasonal basis.
United had been operating the new route since a New York Jets’ commercial lease of Terminal 5 at JFK was expiring on June 14, 2005.
The new airline will have a fleet of two Boeing 737-550 airplanes, United expects to begin flying out of Newark with about 150 flights daily, and is targeting to start flying out of Nassau with about 125 flights. Its route network will be comprised of the existing routes in the Bahamas and the Northeast US mainland, although United plans to fly to both of those cities.
United will use the Bahamas and Northeast US mainland for the Bahamas’ main hubs. That could mean United will not change its schedules to Nassau, and it may change its routes to only those cities, the Bahamas and northeast US mainland.
On the other hand, United may change the New York flights to Nassau to include the Bahamas again, possibly even to include the Bahamas as part of its route network, but this might be just for convenience.
The other airline in the Bahamas is the Bahamas Airlines, which launched a commercial service for passengers from the Bahamas and the U. in April 2006.

The Bahamas (NB) will be the latest stop for new passenger flights for United Airlines Co. The carrier plans to begin flying nonstop between Miami and Nassau on Nov. 26, a flight that will be the company’s fourth nonstop to the Bahamas.
That means on that date, passengers in the Miami-to-Nassau flight will get a stop-over in the Bahamas, which will be the latest flight for United.
It is also the airline’s most recent flight to the islands. United Airlines is the second largest carrier in the Southeast, connecting Chicago to St. Louis, for instance. It plans to expand to other cities in the region in coming years, the carrier said.
The decision to add a fourth flight to the Bahamas, and more to Nassau, followed a series of events in the Bahamas.
31, 2010, United announced it would be shutting down its Bahamas operations at the end of the month. The airline had been providing services through a joint venture with Bermuda-based Qantas Airways Ltd. Bermuda-based Qantas had purchased the United operation in the Bahamas from United in August 2009.
The airline continued operating through Bermuda-based Qantas until late November, 2010, when Qantas transferred the operation to United with the intention of keeping it in the Bahamas indefinitely. Qantas had been providing flights between the Bahamas and Bermuda since 1998, United said, and it was working to keep the operation through at least mid-2011.
But Qantas ended its service from the Bahamas, apparently in protest over the Bahamas’ new regulations under which Qantas could not fly to the Bahamas.
Then on Nov. 11, United said it was closing the airline’s Nassau facilities, and that it was taking all its flights to Nassau off the table.

With the airline’s charter operations in the Bahamas, Bahamas Air, Inc. has been able to service over 1,000 scheduled charter flights per month, which is enough to service the Bahamas market. Bahamas Air, Inc. has also started offering scheduled commercial flights on behalf of the company.

We’ve had a good couple weeks here on this site, so I’m happy to report that we’ve made a lot of progress in the days since we posted our Part 1 series. Partly due to the fact that I’ve had to do a lot of reading and research over the last week or so, and partly due to the fact that our new post is now a real, full-scale attack and threat, I think the most important part of the post is right here.
