NEW YORK — It was not enough to push support for a Microsoft software company higher to hit its new stock price at $46.

But short-sellers who bet against the company raised their bets with a $1 billion bet against software maker Support.

It was the biggest short squeeze in Internet history and the latest example of how the so-called “short-covering” market has become an important industry. The so-called “black swan” theory predicts that when the price of a company goes too far below its previous high, the market will go so far short that there is no way to recoup the losses. It has happened before.

This time, however, it wasn’t a stock that was too low. Microsoft’s stock, down by more than 20% the day before, was too expensive.

But the short squeeze was about more than Microsoft. It was about the so-called “silicon” sector, a combination of high-tech investments, such as semiconductors, software and Internet firms.

The stock market, which has been battered by a series of new regulations such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, has been more than a little distracted by the so-called “Silicon Valley” area that is centered in a handful of northern California suburbs. Its leading stock, Facebook, is up more than 20% since the short trade began.

But that is a small part of the short squeeze.

The short-sellers on Support. com, which is part of the tech giant’s networking group, had figured that the company would sell a record number of shares at the end of the year — more than 2 million.

Not just about Microsoft, but the other sectors on the short squeeze list, include Cisco Systems, the telecom equipment maker; EDS Group, a major cable-TV distributor; and Sun Microsystems, the semiconductor producer.

The short-selling effort was launched by the company’s former chief technology officer, Michael Folliard, who is now chairman of the board of support for his son-in-law, former Microsoft vice president David Stelzter.

After months of testing, many of the iPhone 5S user reviews are out, and the device has only been up for 30 days on an unspecified carrier. The iPhone has sold more than 50,000 units in just the last 30 days, said AppleInsider. The phone is available for sale on all major U. carriers on a “one-time” basis.

The user reviews are the same ones people get from their carrier. The phone is listed in the United States and Canada by Sprint Nextel, a subsidiary of Sprint Nextel, but not by T-Mobile, its largest U. carrier, which also does not provide review scores.

“As a loyal carrier customer that has had the iPhone for quite a while, I know first-hand how important reviews are to you,” said Andy Grossi, Sprint Nextel’s vice president of marketing. “We’re very pleased to provide users with the best device experience they can get, including an updated, seamless user interface that reflects your feedback.

The iPhone 5S can be pre-ordered today from apple. com and new-and-improved iTunes. com, where the phone is available for $199. The phone will begin shipping in the U. in about 6 weeks.

To compare the iPhone 5S to the current iPhone 5, Apple has included an overview on the iPhone 5, Apple’s review of the iPhone 5, and a table that lists out which carriers have the iPhone 5S. We have also compared the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 4S in our review.

In terms of the iPhone 4S, the phone is more expensive than the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 4S is available in 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB models, with prices ranging from $199 to $499, depending on the model. It has also been available in the U. for a few months. Apple’s review of the iPhone 4S is available for free at paulgraham. com/reviews/mobile.

The following iPhone 5S user reviews are from users who have used the phone for a while. The phone is available in the U.

Tips of the Day in Software

We’re starting 2011 with a bang: a bang that I’ll be sure to get right down to the bottom line.

For the first time in many years, it’s time to make it official: The Best of 2012 list.

First, consider the following key points to understand what’s in the year’s Best of 2012 list if you’re reading this column: That’s a question you can ask yourself if you’re curious about how the top sites stack up against other lists and how they compare to your expectations.

Some may be surprised by the relative importance of the data I’ve collected here. However, this list is not my best guess of what’s most important in the year.

So let’s get started.
