This week’s episode of Computer Security contains the most recent reports on Southwest Airlines and American Airlines delaying their seasons and other recent airline announcements in the airline industry that involve the technology.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued its final regulations regarding the security of aircraft engines and other related technologies on September 29, 2013, and Southwest Airlines and American Airlines are one of three large, large US carriers that have filed an application with the Department of Homeland Security’s National Airspace Security Division (NASD) in November 2013 to comply with this final regulation.

The final regulations include a provision that makes it legal to place “the aircraft in a ‘safe condition’ in the event that either the primary aircraft engine or any other related technology is compromised or rendered inoperable” by a person other than the aircraft’s owner. It also includes a provision that makes it lawful to modify a “primary aircraft engine in order to prevent the potential threat to the integrity of the propulsion equipment and to improve the security and reliability of the system.

In an interview with The Register, airline officials said the FAA’s final regulations represent a “significant step forward on the road to safe flying. ” They said Southwest Airlines filed an application based on the regulation’s provisions and agreed to comply with it until January 31, 2014.

American Airlines, a major airline in the industry, also filed an application on November 13, 2013 to comply with the final rule and said they also decided to comply “until November 15, 2013” with the requirement to place engines “in a safe condition in the event that an aircraft is placed in service [or to meet] regulations that limit the number of engine failures. ” American has said they plan to put their engines in service, or modified, by September 26, 2014.

In addition, Southwest Airlines and American Airlines agreed in November 2013 to comply with the final aviation regulations and provide information about “customer information and access” until January 31, 2014.

In another interview with the Register, Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly said the company is in “full compliance” with its aircraft maintenance and operational procedures to ensure safety.
