Sonatus raises $35 million from Hyundai Motor Group Sonatus has raised $35 million in Series A funding from the Hyundai Motor Group, the unit of the South Korean conglomerate, according to people familiar with the matter. The investment will be used to accelerate development of Sonatus’ mobile software and further develop its smartphone operating system.
Sonatus raised $35 million in a Series A funding round led by Hyundai Motor Group and is seeking at least $100 million in more funding to expand the company, these people said. Hyundai’s investment in the company is expected to remain in place after the investment and the company plans to use the money to further accelerate development of Sonatus’ mobile software and further develop its smartphone operating system.
A Sonatus executive said the company does not have any plans to sell the company. The deal was first reported by Mobile Asia and is also reported by KGI Securities and The Motley Fool.
“We are confident in the future of Sonatus and we have a number of great partnerships with other technology companies in Asia that will help us take our products to new heights,” said Sonatus CEO and founding member Eric Xu. “I am excited to announce our Series A funding round which positions us well to achieve the growth we have long been chasing.
The Sonatus board is split over whether the company should continue to compete with Apple and Google in the smartphone market. To be clear, Sonatus’ strategy has always been to develop its own smartphone; this is the second round of funding it has raised in as many weeks and the company remains committed to doing so.
“We are convinced that the right technology is one that will fundamentally change the way we live and work,” said Sonatus CEO Eric Xu. “We are proud of our focus on mobile and are confident in our ability to bring value to the next generation of smartphones.
The investment round was led by Hyundai Investment and Development Company, also known as Hyundai Investment Holdings, a newly created Hyundai Investment Company, which holds a 10. 2% stake in Sonatus. The investment will be used to accelerate development of Sonatus’ mobile software and further develop its smartphone operating system.

While automation of complex and risky software engineering tasks, such as the development of autonomous vehicles, aircraft and ships are very important steps forward in the evolution of our industry, the associated risk must also be acknowledged.
In the case of autonomous driving technology this risk is based on the complexity of the vehicle (especially given that the software must be written in a domain-specific programming language such as C++) not something that’s covered by any existing system design approach. The solution presented in this article is based on the Codeless methodology.
The Codeless methodology provides a clear step by step approach aimed at reducing the risk of automation of systems by designing an approach around the “minimum necessary” functional level and the associated risks.
The first step before integrating autonomous systems into the software engineering roadmap is the definition of the minimum necessary functional level. This step should identify the most important business functionality, the features of the code to be coded, the level of automation required, and the complexity of the software architecture. It is also worth discussing the features of the system and how the desired automation will benefit from this automation, particularly the expected automation from the autonomous systems.
The second step of the Codeless methodology is the definition of the minimum needed level of automation. The software engineering roadmap should define the target automation level along with its associated risks.
When defining the minimum necessary functional level, the Codeless methodology recommends that this step focus on the application of minimal functions to simplify the code, reduce the risk of automation and prevent the need for significant redesign or refactoring. There are many tools and techniques to minimize the number of necessary functions in a software system. We are already using the Codeless methodology for those purposes. As an example, for a complex application, it may be the case that several functions are necessary to make the application work.
