In this security article, I will discuss scenarios under which a malicious file can be mounted with a removable storage media, even when the media does not have any form of protection.
I have tested the article using the Windows 2008 R2 SP1 and Windows 8. I have not tested the newer Windows versions for the same purpose. I have followed the same procedure for the article. You can also download the article from this page.
SecureRemovableStorageMedia can be used to mount the removable storage media of some removable storage formats. For this purpose it consists of two important parts.
The first part can be used as an external storage media. In this regard you should select the storage format supported by the media and the media type. For example, if the storage media is FAT32 formatted, you should select the format of the drive.
The second part is the storage driver. You can use this to mount the removable storage device from any operating system.
The content of the second part depends on the storage format. The storage format of the media depends on the specific storage device and whether the removable storage device supports the specified file format. For example, if the storage media is FAT32 formatted, you should select the appropriate file format and location. Otherwise, you can select the format of the removable storage device.
The storage driver is usually implemented into the system and is independent of the operating system. This is why you need to specify the storage driver for the storage format of the storage media.
For removable storage media the storage format is used to make sure that the media is compatible with the file format. When the media format is changed, the actual content stored on the media should also be changed in order not to break compatibility with the file format.
For examples, with FAT32 formatted media you should select the file format and position of the storage media. Otherwise, the new format will be unknown to the user and could make the files unreadable.
