“The new Mac Pro will deliver twice the performance of the existing Mac Pro and the upcoming Mac mini,” said Andrew Krog, analyst at IDC. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show, said the new Mac Pro will be “one of the faster Macs available, with twice the processing power. “In fact, the new Mac Pro is expected to out perform the older Mac Pro and the Mac mini as an all-encompassing machine. Krog notes that the Intel Ice Lake Xeon W-3300 CPUs, with their three-cores, four threads and 10-way HyperThreading technology, are optimized for the Mac Pro. The new Mac Pro‘s processors are also designed to keep up with the latest applications and GPUs with the new quad-core design. The new Mac Pro will have a total of six cores, but two of the cores will be used for compute and the other two will run the memory controller, Intel’s Kaby Lake-R processor. According to Intel, the Mac Pro will be the first fully integrated, multi-cabinet computer with Apple’s new, high-end desktop processor, the Xeon W-3100. But a spokesperson for Apple declined to comment about its design, as did a spokeswoman for the Mac maker.

Intel has released two new Xeon E 3-series processors — the Xeon E 3-120v and E 3-240v — both of which are based on a 15-nanometer (nm) Zen+ microarchitecture.

This new line of Xeon E processors use 4 new process transistors (PTS) that are 30 percent more efficient than the previous generation E3 processors.

Intel also updated its XeON processor for use on the new Mac Pro, now featuring a 10-nm Zen microarchitecture and a new 12-nm (nanometer) die shrink. The 10-nm version of the Xeon E processors are optimized to make them 10 times faster than the previous generation processors.

Intel is now offering the two new Xeon E processors with 16 GB of RAM, a storage system that is the highest-performance PCIe option, and a PCIe slot.

Both processors are priced at $2,699 for the new XeON-based Xeon E 3-120v, and $1,329 for the XeON-based Xeon E 3-240v.

Intel has made some changes to their Xeon X series processors. These include adding a new M2S Cache (Memory-to-System-to-Storage-to-System) on the CPU package, as well as a new M2M cache. The new M2M cache, based on a new 14-nanometer (nm) process technology, is a 32-GB (gigabyte) cache that allows the processors to be four times faster than their predecessors with 4-level caching (the previous XeON processors).

Intel’s next generation Xeon E processors will be available in an OEM kit in April 2016. The Intel Xeon E 3-120v and Xeon E 3-240v processors are available from various computer manufacturers.
