He had the worst stuff.
He was trying to hit. He was getting hammered. He was throwing knuckleballs, and at times his velocity appeared to be the same as it had been in the minor leagues. It didn’t take long for the signs to change for him.
There was a lull in his pitches, until the Dodgers and the Giants took turns trying to get him to change his approach. With a fastball moving 95-plus mph, and with command of his changeup, the Dodgers were confident they could get him into the game.
But now, with a slider that averaged as high as 94, and maybe as low as 83, the Angels felt pressure. And that pressure was enough for the Dodgers to pull out the victory.
After the game, Angels reliever Matt Purke said, “For the first time all year, we were able to move up in the AL West. That’s what you want for the team.
The team is only two games ahead of the second wild-card spot. It’s a position where four of the six teams in the division have a single playoff spot within their grasp. And if six teams make it to the postseason, the division will have a different look than it did a month or two ago.
The Angels and their pitching staff have shown they can sustain their season. They will have another chance to make the playoffs this year. The Angels have a chance to be a wild card.
With the season about to wind down, there are a few more things to consider. The Tigers and the Rays were the only team with winning records on the wrong side of doubleheader. Both clubs also had a good run.
The Angels, after all, are still a young team with three years of experience after reaching the playoffs. The other four teams have been around longer, with six-plus seasons of experience.

They lost to the Florida Gulf Coast League Yankees, but once again the team had a good record for a while and was able to make an appearance in the playoffs. The team went on to have more success the next two seasons with a decent record of 23-23 in their first season and 24-22 in their second season. But in September 2011, the team fired coach Bill Thomas. The team was able to get back to the playoffs for the first time in two years, losing to the Florida Gulf Coast League Yankees in the semifinal round. They would go on to play another playoff game against the Florida Gulf Coast League Rangers.
With the team making a respectable run to the postseason the one year after firing Thomas but losing their playoff tie, the team’s roster is a mix of youngsters who are finding their way in the minor leagues, some veterans who are either making their way to the big leagues or just making their way up the ladder.

Errors in the All-Star Game: Rodriguez vs. Judge
“All around probably the best series we played the entire season,” manager Alex Cora said. “We played defense. We ran well the bases. We put pressure on them and got timely hit. Eduardo Rodriguez (6-4) was solid at earning his first win in nine starts. He gave away a two-run homer to Aaron Judge in the sixth, but New York held up five hits and struck out eight in six innings.
If there is an argument to be made that the All-Star Game was the best game of the year, it is that it was the only one not to be broadcast live on television. A couple of games like that don’t really count. But to really evaluate this matchup, we need to understand the context of it.
The first two All-Star Games featured some of the most memorable and entertaining action on one of the most spectacular stages to ever exist: the Superdome. The first game featured some of the greatest moments in sports, while the second was just as riveting, but it was not broadcast live, yet because it wasn’t so many people watched, the drama was too low.
So the All-Star Game in 2012, which featured the best players on the best rosters (and still includes more stars than in any previous game), was a game that was, more than any other, a live TV contest. The second game, when the first half of the game was broadcast live and the second half was not, is even more dramatic.
The fact is that the game can be watched at home, if you happen to be willing to put the effort into it (it’s not much of an effort). But that’s not the whole story.
From a business standpoint, the All-Star Game generates revenue for the league. Without the spectacle of the game, there would be no league. The bottom line is that the league can put out a team and win the World Series. And then you look around you and you see that the league is winning more than ever as a result of this All-Star Game.
The only real downside to watching the game in person is the length of the game. However, it does not matter if you’ve got four or eight hours to watch it. It’s the fact that the game is not broadcast live that makes it the most compelling viewing event in the entire year.
The All-Star Game of 2012 is the best game of the year.
