Why install Chrome OS on my old PC?

This article is published for the purposes of the Debian project, and is not yet in a format suitable for distribution as a “system package”.

The purpose of this article is to offer insight into installing Chrome OS on computers on which Debian is running but not installed. In the process, I will explore the reasons that I am doing this, the practical, technical limitations involved, and how to best proceed.

I am going to assume that you have recently purchased a new computer, and that you have installed Debian onto it. Also, I will assume that you have some familiarity with installing Debian onto a computer and that you have some familiarity with installing the Debian desktop environment on your currently-installed operating system.

For those using Windows, the process of performing the same tasks as I am doing on Linux is very similar, except that instead of using a CD-image called “wheezy-updates”, you will be using the Debian “Wheezy” release, which contains updates to all of the Debian packages available for the release, including the GNOME desktop.

(I’ll explain why I am doing this in detail later in the article, so I thought I’d mention it now: if you are installing from a CD image of “wheezy”, you won’t actually be going the “Wheezy” release.

To install Debian on a computer, you first use the “dpkg —builddeb” command. The command will prompt you for the distribution’s filename, and then prompt you whether you are installing from a DVD or a CD that you have made available for download. After you have entered a valid download path and selected appropriate software to be downloaded, you will be asked if you want to “build-depend” on the packages you have selected. (You will then be prompted for your location in case you want to install the additional packages that have been built-dependant on the selected packages.

If you select “yes”, then the process of installing Debian will begin, though you can select “no” and continue with the installation. In the event that you do not complete installation of the packages from the selected distribution, the build-depends will fail.

Connecting Linux Mint to the Internet

For almost everyone who has ever tried to plug in to the ether via Ethernet or WiFi, the end result has been confusing, frustrating and often unresponsive web browsing. For the average computer user, this is a problem. For the more advanced, it is also an annoying inconvenience. In the Linux world, however, the situation is markedly different. Thanks to the introduction of the new Linux Mint operating system, the situation is better than ever. While this technology, as it was called then, is still quite new, the underlying technology has been around for some time. The end result has been the addition of many niceties that other operating systems have overlooked. For example, while many users have been annoyed by the inability to browse the Web, the Mint team has been able to provide a much better Web browsing experience. What started out as an experiment has turned into a long-term commitment for one and all. The Mint team even plans to continue developing this technology and to improve it. The reason is simple. The Mint community is a tightly-knit one, and as long as the operating system is a priority for them the work will continue — Mint’s development is a one-stop operations system. This is also the case on other Linux distributions as well: A couple of years ago the same developers started up Debian, and in it there is the same principle: a tightly knit community, a single official software release, and development in parallel as well. It is obvious that this is the way the world should be done. But the Internet is not a closed system, and, as a community, Linux users are able to benefit from it far beyond the basic Internet functionality. A few weeks ago, we received some very interesting email correspondence from a user in the United States, who asked why it was that he had to type his password every time he logged into the Internet. When he asked for the reason, his question was answered by the team of the Mint team. In the same mail, we learned that he has been having trouble logging into his email and that he was getting a few odd errors when trying to connect to the Internet. So, here we are, back again, with more good news. We know from previous articles that the upcoming release of Linux Mint 17.
