Take-Two Interactive (NASDAQ: TTWO) announced on August 4th that it acquired rights to development and production of Rockstar Games’ classic Grand Theft Auto(R) franchise for the PC. The announcement came just nine days after Rockstar Games acquired Take-Two Interactive (NASDAQ: TWII) last December. Since the Rockstar acquisition, the three remaining members of the Take-Two Interactive Board of Directors, Andrew House, Steve Burke, and Richard “Wei” Weingarten had been working on a number of projects to build upon the legacy of their combined companies, including the development of Grand Theft Auto(R) on PC.

Wei, speaking to Take-Two Interactive’s CEO Strauss Zelnick, noted that Rockstar Games has not shared a timeline for when its Rockstar-developed games and IP will release on PC. Zelnick, responding to Weingarten’s inquiries about the status of development on Grand Theft Auto(R), noted that Rockstar was “constantly working with Take-Two to make sure that our games, in particular Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto(R) are available on PC to satisfy gamers’ appetite for new and unique adventure games.

Zelnick continued, “When we were first formed, [Take-Two Interactive] had a very diverse slate of titles. Now, they’ve expanded their portfolio of games and we can’t wait to see what they come up with.

Zelnick stated that Rockstar had “decided to expand their IP onto the PC and we’re all excited about that partnership.

At its release in October of 2001, Grand Theft Auto(R) was the third most successful video game franchise of all time, selling more than 20 million copies worldwide. The third installments in the Grand Theft Auto(R) series launched on the GameCube and Xbox systems in 2003 and 2004, respectively.

With a range of products spanning the globe, the firm is currently the largest video game studio in the UK, having formed with the original founder Mark Rein. Rockstar has developed games across every major computing platform the world has ever seen, whether it be the early days of the Commodore 64, the Nintendo 64, the Atari ST, the Xbox, or the PlayStation 2.

Rein and his team have been the core developers of many of the most successful video games that have been released over the course of Rockstar’s many years.

Tips of the Day in Computer Games

It’s been an interesting week for the gaming community. A couple of new games are coming to the market, both of them released in the UK.

SVGA (slim), which I was first excited about, and then found it overpriced. I’m starting to see more and more that it is too pricey for the quality it produces. I also think the price is too high to support the quality that is currently available on the market. I don’t mind spending £40-50 on a game but the price tag seems a bit much now for me and, most importantly, I’m getting a game that needs my money more than most of the games I buy.

The other game that has been on my radar for some time is the next generation of games with the upcoming Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo consoles. I’ve just finished the review for the Playstation 3. It was a great review, so well written. The reviews I’ve seen for the Playstation 2 and its successor, the Playstation I had to settle for the Xbox and I was pretty disappointed.
