Beer and brewing are a major part of Indian culture and the importance of beer and craft beer is steadily increasing in India. This is expected to grow further over the next few years, with a projected growth of over 20 percent in the next five years. The market for beer and brewing is projected to grow at a CAGR of around 21. 4 percent over the period 2011 to 2016. However, this growth is still relatively slow.

Established breweries in India are starting to face significant competition from younger, local breweries which are opening up, developing and adding to the beer industry in India. One of the challenges these new brands are facing is the complexity of the operations and product range. There are many companies offering quality product lines but they operate in isolation, and they are not able to connect with the rest of the pack in any way. The complexity of the market is also increased by the fact that there are some major breweries in India which do not sell in any way directly to consumers.

In the near future, this will change as more smaller, local breweries will come up and the market will become competitive in many ways. However, the market remains one of the few industries where consumers do not have a choice of the brands they are used to and most brands are relatively expensive.

In terms of business models, new entrants are creating an entirely new market space which has no competition. Instead of being able to choose from the products of the existing companies, the consumer will be able to buy them from vendors of their choice. This will allow them to customize their product range and access new brands at attractive prices.

In India, we have already seen that this can be done. In 2016, a new category of beverages called ‘Chips’ was established, which is a category of beverages where the quality of the brands is maintained with standard packaging. Similar to the beers, the product lines included in the chip category are also very wide.

The market for beverage management software development is expected to be highly fragmented, and even though there are many types of products available for companies operating in the beer and beverage industry, most companies have a very narrow range of products that they sell.
