The Detroit Public Theatre production, Beauty and the Beast, is dedicated to the legacy, importance, and impact of the legendary song and story of Beauty and the Beast. Set in the French Revolution, the story follows a young girl named Belle, who wants nothing more than to see her sweetheart Prince Charming happily settled in the “beautiful countryside” of North America. Design and preservation of a muffin factory and garage as a community arts centre

As a working class community, the muffin factory served a unique and significant role as a community arts centre for both its workers and its patrons, the shopkeepers from the neighbouring street. The shopkeepers were of the “porkie granny” generation, which in recent years has experienced a gradual decline that may be reflected in the number of people shopping in the neighbourhood. The shopkeepers were from a working class background similar to the shopowners who previously frequented the muffin factory. They were middle class and had worked hard to build up a community. The shopkeeper lived on the corner of a busy corner retail street, which, in fact, was a public space.

Over the years, the muffin factory’s location has changed over time, with the last buildings being abandoned by both shopkeepers and the community. This particular part of the building has been abandoned and deteriorated for a number of years, which indicates its time of use as a community arts centre. It was built close to the muffin factory in the 1950s, when its purpose was not just the manufacture of muffins and its proximity to a busy corner retail street. It was for the muffin factory’s purpose as a community arts centre, so that it functions as a living, breathing community space with the community’s creative endeavour as both a centre for its life as a community and an activity for the community. This particular location is close to several community centres in the city such as The City, City Centre and the CNE, The University (both located within walking distance), other neighbourhood centres such as Old Parliament Square and the Westgate Shopping Centre and the new shopping mall just finished construction in East Melbourne. It is also close to several schools and the University. It is one of the most visible retail locations in the street.

In this particular community space, the muffin factory plays a significant role as a place of community gathering, with the muffin factory’s shopkeepers bringing muffins to any free meal or dinner parties that they attend. The muffin factory is also an event centre, with free muffin stalls and workshops.
