A Yale Medical School employee stole and resold a computer, and investigators hope to find the thief — and get justice.
Rupp, 32, was arrested and charged in October 2017 when the FBI raided the laboratory and obtained laptop, cell phone, tablet and printer equipment.
The federal prosecutor charged that Sgt. Rupp and other members of the medical school’s research team, including a doctor, professor and technician, obtained computers and other equipment from Yale’s computer lab and sold them to unsuspecting individuals.
The laptop, cell phone and tablet, along with other equipment, were sold online by their seller, Dr. Jeffrey Wexler, in three separate transactions.
All three are accused of using stolen credit card information to buy the stolen goods, according to the indictment.
Officials said Sgt. Rupp and other members of the medical school’s research team stole the equipment and sold them for a total of $32.
Prosecutors said the stolen equipment was then resold online, and investigators seized a computer valued at $7. 5 million, a tablet computer valued at $3. 5 million, and other equipment valued at $12.
Rupp’s lawyer, Daniel B. Tarlow, declined to comment.
Rupp, a native of St. , was previously suspended from duty in July 2017 after he was charged with embezzling a total of $11,000 from his employer. During the investigation, the FBI seized a $5,000 laptop, a $2,000 tablet computer, $1,100 in cash and $7,534. 40 in currency and a ring that contained $1,000 in cash. The FBI had said there was no evidence of embezzlement during the investigation.
Rupp was suspended from duty in August 2017 after it was revealed that he was stealing more than $11,000 from a former college employee. During the investigation, a laptop computer belonging to one of his former college lab assistants, who worked in his laboratory, was seized.
Investigators seized a laptop and tablet computer from the college and sold them online.

On the morning of February 12, 2013, he walked to the courthouse in Auburn, New York, a small town of 50,000, to drop a dime on his friend and neighbor.
Peter, as he was known, was a serial criminal. In the span of just a few years, he had gone from state Sen. to a member of the fugitive underworld in the federal prison system. He had been arrested, but not extradited. And he was out on the streets of this small West Coast town, with no idea who he worked for, and no idea what he was doing behind bars.
Instead, Peter was a member of what was known in the criminal underworld as a “biker gang” – a criminal organization whose members work together to commit crimes that involve murder, robbery, and narcotics distribution at the expense of the government.
This biker gang that Peter belonged to carried out a number of high-profile, high-profile crimes in recent years, including the murder in an abandoned building of an undercover DEA agent, the robbing of banks in several states, and the shooting of Matthew Sheppard, one of the last five FBI agents to be murdered in the United States.
“He was involved in a number of murders, some of them violent and some of them not,” said David D’Alessandro, a New York prosecutor who handled the case against Peter.
In April of 2008, a federal grand jury sitting in Buffalo, New York, indicted Peter’s organization for conspiracy to commit murder, armed robbery, wire fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering. The charges stemmed from the shooting death of an ex-DEA agent in a vacant building on New York City’s Upper East Side. He had been investigating a drug dealer named Peter Prenko. Prenko was killed in the shootout, and the money that was missing from the robbery was laundered through an organization that Peter and other members of his gang once headed.
