I was just browsing through my Wear OS data when I came across this new “feature” that just didn’t sound like anything I’d ever seen on a Wear OS device: “The most likely event is that Google will no longer support the Wear OS. ” Wear OS, however, is Google’s operating system, not Wear OS, so they wouldn’t be using Android Wear (which is still alive and well). But the Wear OS is apparently a way to put notifications to the “forever” as it “will go away,” and they weren’t very specific about it. I looked into it further and Google has confirmed that Google will stop supporting the Wear OS once it goes away. That’s the worst thing that could happen to Google’s wearable platform. I’d give it a 90% chance.

I’ll break it down for you: from Google’s perspective, the Wear OS is their operating system running on smartwatches. That’s right, that’s what everyone thinks. And it’s not true — they’re launching a new operating system for the watches, but it’s not actually a Wear OS per se. Instead, it’s a platform for running Android apps — it’s an Android Wear OS.

Google’s original reason for offering the Wear OS was to let developers use the device to run Wear apps, but they’ve since changed their minds: “I spent a lot of time thinking about this and I’m really excited about the possibilities. I’ve thought about building wearable apps for Wear OS for a while now,” Larry Page told Engadget. “We think if we can build apps for the watch, it will be game-changing.

What exactly are Google’s ideas? One suggestion that came up a lot was a way to take advantage of a new capability that the Android Wear system (it’s basically a standalone version of the Android operating system) already has: the notifications API. The problem is, when you install an Android Wear app, it takes up space on your device.

So many apps are not only too expensive for the amount of money you spend on an Android Wear device, they’re also not compatible with all devices. When you finally decide to buy a device, you might actually have to pay an extra of $50 or $100 just to install the preinstalled apps. And it’s not like you can just uninstall them and delete the preinstalled app.

It’s not uncommon for someone to have a dozen or so different Wear OS devices, and they’re not even compatible with each other. It’d be really cool if Android Wear was like Android Marshmallow, with a few apps available for all devices. You have this awesome, new feature. And you’ll only have to have two or three different devices to use it.

The most frustrating thing about Wear OS is that many apps aren’t any more compatible, or they require all devices before they work properly.

And that’s not the only thing. Android Wear has a lot of problems as well.

This is another important difference.
