The introduction of a software development Bachelor’s Degree program at the State University of New York in Albany, New York, has been met with mixed reception, since the program has not been funded by the National Science Foundation. The project’s website, www. edu, lists the program, but also includes disclaimers advising that the program “does not meet the quality standards for a Bachelor’s Degree in the field. ” However, this statement is contradicted by the program’s official brochure, which lists the program’s “Astro” as the major and courses by the engineering-centric Software Design and Development program, along with courses by the Computer Science program at Albany.

While this may reflect a bias in favor of the more urban, relatively inexpensive location of engineering colleges, the fact remains that much of the work done during the course of an individual engineer’s career can be accomplished outside the walls of an engineering school. The economic cost of such a product would be zero and the product itself may be less costly than it could be made with the help of a software engineer.

The economics of working in the field of software engineering are well understood, and the economics of a software engineering degree are also well understood.
