SCHUYLKESTOWN: From the depths of the past comes a new opportunity to be part of the world’s largest public event. By taking part this year, residents of Schuylkill and West Chester will have another unique opportunity of a lifetime to experience the wonders of the Schuylkill River for themselves. The Schuylkill Center for Arts and Humanities (SCHA) in West Chester is the first of a planned “multimodal cultural corridor” linking Schuylkill County’s nine remaining communities, including Schuylkill Falls. The corridor, which stretches from the Wittenberg Avenue bridge on the Schuylkill River north to the county line, will connect the boroughs: Schuylkill Falls, Schuylkill Town, Schuylkill Township and Schuylkill River. The area is being developed by local non-profit The Schuylkill River Initiative, a community-wide, innovative community effort led by Schuylkill County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.

The Schuylkill River Initiative will host an August 1 open house at Schuylkill Center for Arts and Humanities to discuss the corridor and the new public events planned with the Schuylkill River Initiative (SRI). The open house is free and open to the public.

Environmental art director Tina Procalz

The Environmental Art Director’s Series of Films for the A.

Environmental Art Director Tina Procalz has become the Environmental Art Director’s most productive and influential art director. She created environmental art in support of environmental change and sustainability. I’ll speak with her about her history, art direction techniques, how she got her start, and which media she uses to create her films and documentaries.

Environmental art is a subgenre of environmental documentary that deals with issues, environmental issues, problems, and the solutions in relation to a theme. Usually involving issues that affect the environment including environmental pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Most environmental art features interviews and field research.

“I’ve done quite a bit of work in the film and environmental documentary areas,” she told me. “I was trained in film and radio and I think I’ve learned what I need to know about all of this. I’ve put my own stamp on it, too. I really am a filmmaker.

Procalz’s education, training, and background are impressive. She did her undergrad at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, a master’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and a doctorate in environmental sociology from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

“I spent a year at the University of Denver. I had a really good time there, but I didn’t take courses there. I just took every course I could find and I taught myself,” she said. “I was in a master’s program for a really long time. I had a lot of courses, but I just didn’t go to courses.

“I took courses in the environmental area. I did that for a whole year,” she said. “You have to put a lot of time in. You’re working in a university, you have to work in a classroom.

Procalz also worked in the environmental documentary fields from the beginning of her education, she said. From 2003-2005 she worked in the documentary field as an environmental art director.
