“It’s all about the eye-catching graphics you get with Pixlr,” explains David Brubacher in his latest book, The Pixlr Handbook. “The company will help you design colorful flyers and brochures that are easily portable and easy to read with the right software.
Aware, the company began in the 1980s as a design laboratory based in San Diego and, before that, in Montreal, Canada. In 1996, Brubacher took his company, which has a long and rich history of designing business cards and other stationary, to San Francisco. Since then, Pixlr has grown to become a $300 million company with offices scattered all over the United States and has a presence in more than 30 countries. Its latest product, the Pixlr Designer and Flyer software, is a suite that lets you design and print creative, portable, and easy-to-maintain business cards, leaflets, posters and other workprint, which range in price from $80 to $1,500.
The software also allows you to add your own graphics, in the form of images, video or audio clips, and, if you have a graphic design department, to use that department’s software for making and editing. The company also makes available a number of desktop publishing applications and has recently launched a Web-based version of its product.
“The whole point of using software is to get the job done,” says Brubacher. “It’s a shortcut, not a decision, and we’ve got the software that will get it done.
Brubacher’s book also includes a chapter on the Pixlr Designer and Flyer software, a section on the company’s Web site, and a complete list of companies that use the company’s products.
The company is most recently working on a project for a company that will be launching a new product and is “looking for creative solutions to help it get off to a fast start,” says Brubacher. “I think the most important message is that you don’t have to be a designer to become a creative business owner.
