Expansion of NBCU News Group plans
“Our goal is to provide an even playing field for new news organizations and a level playing field for NBCUs,” said NBCU President Susan Zirinsky in a statement. “We believe that our new NBCU News Group will bring a great deal of journalistic innovation to local news.

NBCU News’s expansion across all of its affiliates was approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) after taking a majority vote last month. As well as the addition of the new NBCU Group, the FCC announced new “New NBCU News Group’s First Class” status with a full suite of high-end equipment, enhanced services, and a new team of journalists.
The new NBCU News Group will continue to be a news source for NBC Universal News Division, NBC Universal News Group, NBC News Cable and NBCUniversal Cable News Network, as well as for NBC News Radio, NBC News Studios and Global TV.
“Our goal is to provide an even playing field for new news organizations. The FCC has given us license to operate our NBCU News Division, NBCU News Group, and NBCU News Network, and the additional NBCU News Group’s First Class status makes it easier for NBCU to recruit, train and educate journalists at every corner of the globe,” said Zirinsky. “We’ve been working with other news organizations to bring unique experiences to local news, and our new NBCU News Group will be the most effective and responsive in bringing NBCNews to NBCU. We’re proud of the FCC’s approval and excited to work with NBCU on this new initiative.

The NBC News Group and the U. Department of Justice have announced that they have reached a settlement to ensure that individuals accused of terrorism and other serious criminal offenses accused as youth are brought to justice in a timely manner and that judicial decisions are not made in secret without due regard for the interests of national security.
The settlement agreement was announced on June 20, the same day that FBI Director Robert Mueller announced that terrorism suspects should be provided an individualized, non-secreted judicial process so that each individual’s individual case can receive the benefit of the impartial consideration accorded every other individual in an FBI criminal investigation, including all other FBI criminal investigations.
The agreement is the result of an extensive effort by the FBI and the Department of Justice. The FBI is pleased with the agreement and is committed to ensuring that individual rights are upheld in the future as the investigation continues and as individual cases move forward. According to the statement from the Department of Justice, “The FBI and Department of Justice will continue to work together to ensure that the rights of defendants in federal prosecutions are respected. ” The FBI reiterated that this agreement also ensures that defendants who were convicted or accepted plea bargains get a fair hearing that respects their rights.
“Individuals whose cases are brought into federal court must have a fair and independent individualized review of their cases,” said Acting FBI Chief Louis Freeh. “If federal sentencing standards were to be left to the discretion of the prosecutor — and not just the judge — this would put innocent plaintiffs at a disadvantage.
Under the agreement, individual defendants will be permitted to request that their cases be reviewed by a “special review team” which will include a prosecutor assigned by the Department of Justice and a defense lawyer from the offices of the United States Attorneys. The special review team can review a record of the case and determine whether the government has met its obligations under the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure and the law.
“The agreement recognizes that some of these defendants were not involved in acts of terrorism that are covered by 21 U. § 930, or, for that matter most criminal defendants,” said Freeh.
