The first game released in 2010 that we might consider a horror game is the horror game by Double Fine that comes out every year. The game is called Db F, and it is a horror game in that it features a story about a man with a child, a story that can, when put in a horror game, be quite scary. Because Double Fine released the game in 2010, I thought I had covered everything that happens in the game already. I didn’t know that the game also features a story about a man with a child that is not a horror game in the conventional sense.
I asked my colleague Greg Kasavin if he could tell me more about Db F. Greg asked me to go to my dorm room in the afternoon, and he played the game with me.

Devotion is like the classic horror game, Resident Evil: Vendetta, but with a twist: instead of infected zombies you will play with a group of kids. The kids have a reason to be cautious, they are responsible for cleaning the house, making a fire and taking care of the kids. In their minds they are monsters, but they are also very normal kids who are trying to survive the most terrible nightmare of all time. And in their world everything is happening for a reason, just look at the children playing this game; they are like ants in the grass. In fact if you are playing this game you will never experience the nightmare of fear, you will not be scared to your very core. In fact, this game is more of a psychological horror game than any other game, maybe it has no comparison to any other game, but this is exactly the quality that scares you, and makes you think that this is something that could happen to you, maybe you will feel the same way when you are playing this game. You will not be a passive spectator of this game, you will be active and you will start to do something to make yourself feel less alone with this scary game.

Why was the game Red Candle Games pulled from Steam?
As a player, the main question I have is why did Valve pull this title from the store? I believe the main problem was its use of non-standard characters: no names, no pictures, no names and faces, just a random number with no genders or race.
I don’t think it was a “game issue”, but more a “legal issue”. With the Steam store rules and policies, one would not think it a big deal how this character selection was made. The players wouldn’t expect it since it was so random and so unoriginal, it is a bit like if you give a random number to the color red and the person says “I am red” that is quite a strange thing to say. But Valve said “I don’t want any of the characters to be taken seriously”. We are talking about an “old school” game in which the players choose their own names to be red.
I think it is reasonable for Valve to say that it does not want to receive any of the characters from the Steam store. Even I, who plays a game with no standard names, was surprised by the game it came with and I agree with them. I think it is a bad thing for the community to get a game that, with all the randomness and no name or face to it, is completely nonsensical. Even my friends who said that they wished they could play a game that would be like a “Red-Chamber Game” with characters from the Red Candle Games store will agree.
The reason is the legal battle. It was not because there was anything wrong with the game. I did not find the game to be bad at all. It was just a game with some strange character design and some things not in the same style as other games. It was just a game that was “too odd” to be played on Steam and was not something worth getting. That is why as of now – it will not appear in the store.
It was the legal battle that forced Valve to pull the game. The game is a legal mess of a game to put on Steam.
