Demon Slayer, the first game developed by Team Impulse for the Game Boy and Game Gear, is the story of a group of teenagers, the Slayer, in the woods, who kill demons with their bare hands. The game was published in 1989 in North America by Atari, and was the first for the Game Boy and Game Gear, and the first for both portable systems. While originally intended for the Game Boy, and later for the Game Gear, the game was eventually ported and developed for both systems. Demon Slayer uses a similar art style, featuring a mix of pixel-art, cel animation, and text, from the early 8-bit days of the NES, to the 1980s and early 1990s of the Genesis, all while being more detailed and darker than its predecessor. Demon Slayer was not widely successful, and after development is halted for some years, never releasing outside of Japan, the game eventually went out of stock in the US. The game was developed by Team Impulse, who had worked on similar games at their other notable release for the Game Cube, Final Fantasy and Mega Man X, Final Fantasy X, and Mega Man X2. The Game Boy and Game Gear versions were published by Atari, while the Genesis version was published by Sega.

A lot of what I’ve read says that Demon Slayer has no connection to the other titles. While I believe it’s true that Demon Slayer wasn’t developed by Team Impulse, the team’s ideas for the title all stem from one project, and the idea for its name was derived from Demon (the Norse god of the underworld) and Slayer. However, I’m not aware of where this game was intended to go, and its development is probably very similar to other titles developed by Team Impulse for other systems. As such, it’s probable that Demon Slayer isn’t actually related to Demon or the other titles at all.

The Perspective.
