In 2010, Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) announced their plan to construct a new data center in Ciena, which was planned to be powered by a new ultra-low cost HVDC cable network. However, in 2010, the new network suffered a major security breach for which the perpetrators managed to access the entire network. The problem stemmed from the fact that the cable companies did not have effective, secure authentication to access the network.

The fact that the network was vulnerable to hacking has prompted Cisco to implement a network security certification program in 2010. The program, a partnership with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), is designed to make network attacks more difficult. In the past, network security has been managed by Network and Security Operations (NSO) in Cisco’s labs. The NSO team worked closely with Cisco’s security engineers and security operations staff, enabling the NSO team to develop a unified security framework for all Cisco products and services.

Cisco initially focused on building a unified network security system that was independent of the network engineers. The NSO team worked to define a system that would work for all Cisco products and that would operate independently of Cisco’s design team. Eventually, this unified system design was implemented through the unified security design and test (USDT) and the unified security testing team (USTT) in the labs. The security certifications were designed to be independent of the design and testing teams at Cisco. This approach was adopted after the fact of the network security breach, as it was found that the network engineers were not aware of the security breaches and had never gone through the certification process.

The new network, called the Lumea-Ciena Data Center, will be connected to a single fiber network that will span over 40,000 square meters. The network will accommodate Cisco’s latest and most advanced network technologies like high-speed Ethernet and DOCSIS 3.

The new network will leverage the existing Cisco networks in the Ciena area by deploying a unique connection scheme, referred to as EMC (Extended Mitigation Communication). The EMC scheme will allow for the use of two different connections between the existing Ethernet backbone and the network.

One of the new features in SharePoint 2010 is the ability to automatically manage security. All SharePoint 2010 users receive an option to manage the security of their organization – for free.
