In this week of action, the city of Baltimore is in a state of emergency. The Emergency Management Bureau and Emergency Operations Division of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s office are requesting that we all help our community to do its part to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Together, this week’s focus will be working alongside parents, doctors, and public health experts to make it happen. We’ll also be using our community’s resources to spread the message to our city’s public health and public safety officials. A “vaccine in the mail” day, sponsored by the city of Baltimore (and the local branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers), will be held immediately following the school district’s scheduled vaccination. The day will include activities, such as science fairs, to raise awareness about immunizations. We also encourage you to visit the Vaccines and Immunizations site to get answers to frequently asked questions about vaccinations, and learn about your options for getting a vaccine. At least 10 to 15 events are scheduled during this week of action, in which we’ll be promoting the importance of vaccines. There are five cities in Baltimore County that are in a state of emergency. This week will be one of them. However, new cases in the last month of 2019 have increased, as compared to the same period of 2018. This may be an indicator that measles cases may be increasing nationally and across the country, particularly among those who may have never been vaccinated against measles.

The CDC reported that the CDC was reporting a “new low” on measles in 2019 in the United States and “an upward trend,” even as “the number of measles cases remains below 100,000.
